Coalition row angers Kenyans: poll

Kenya's apparent political instability is among the most important issues currently facing the country. Most Kenyans - 61 per cent - also feel that disagreements between the two principals in the coalition government are likely to derail efforts to get a new constitution, which most want to be in place before any elections. The last two weeks have been marked by infighting within the coalition after president Kibaki reversed a decision by prime minister Raila Odinga to suspend two ministers over corruption in their dockets.

According to an opinion poll carried out this month and released on Thursday, the saga surrounding the PM's suspension of Prof. Sam Ongeri and Mr. William Ruto was the most obvious sign of the tension that has characterised the relationship between the two wings of the coalition.

"Political instability is obviously on the rise since it was not among the top five issues the last time we did a survey ... people interpret that infighting as the sign of the discord between the two principals," said Mr. Caesar Handa, chief executive officer of Strategic PR, the firm that conducted the poll. Although the two would appear to have patched up their differences, said Mr. Handa, people still read their body language and can tell there are still unresolved issues between them.

But 70 per cent of the respondents supported the PM's action with 32 per cent saying it was a good sign that graft is being fought within government. Similarly, 75 per cent of those polled were unhappy with President Kibaki's decision to rescind the suspension of the two ministers, with most of those of who back him saying he had the right if he was not consulted.

More than half of Kenyans - 55 per cent - rank the prime minister as the person they trust most to lead the fight against corruption in the country, with president Kibaki coming second at 14 per cent.

PNU sees any of Raila's actions as fighting kikuyus...to them the only real problem Kenya has is having a kihii going by the name Raila. Once he is killed, Kenya will be totally peaceful...

What do you get when you mix a good joke with a bad one? Let me put it differently:

Is it PNU, Mathira Express, NUP, Kula Kenya Kabisa, PUN, Ndegwa and Sons, UPN, Ndaragwa Cash Diversion, UNP or Imenti Leasings? And is it Kalonzo, Uhuru, George or Ephraim? Answer: it's the PNU circus coming to a resort near you (see below). If you think the bickering in ODM is messing up the party, wait till these guys get started . Btw, is it just me or is Martha Karua cosying up to the unthinkable?
________

A planned retreat for Party of National Unity affiliates aimed at forging a united front ahead of the 2012 elections is threatening to break the alliance.

The Naivasha meeting is seen as part of the jostling for control of the alliance by vice-president Kalonzo Musyoka, deputy prime minister Uhuru Kenyatta and internal security minister George Saitoti. A number of leaders in the party are opposed to the manner in which the retreat has been organised, with some saying they had not been consulted.

PNU secretary general Kiraitu Murungi, the key man behind the retreat, has been accused of laying ground for the formation of a new alliance to face the Orange Democratic Movement in 2012. Those opposed to the retreat see it a scheme by Mr. Murungi to put together a political machine for Mr. Musyoka, the ODM-Kenya leader who Mr. Murungi has publicly declared will be the "driver of their bus" during the 2012 elections.

But Mr. Murungi said on Tuesday that the retreat would discuss party unity, coalition affairs and a new constitution. He was not surprised, he added, that some factions of political parties had opposed the retreat, noting that the meeting was voluntary. "It is a meeting of the willing. Those who see the sense in us working together are welcome. It is also the constitutional right of those opposed to it to stay away," he said.

There is also the argument that, instead of forming a new party, Mr. Murungi should utilise his energies to strengthen PNU. He is reported to have met Safina leader Paul Muite and Democratic Party secretary general Chris Murungaru to appeal to them to attend the Naivasha meeting. The two parties are among those that have said they are not interested in the retreat. Mr. Muite on Tuesday told the Nation that his party would send Mathira mp Ephraim Maina to the retreat ... As an observer.

Reports indicate that Prof Saitoti, the PNU chairman, and KANU's Uhuru Kenyatta are also not keen to attend the meeting. The two are among a number of key politicians linked to the new alliance, which has settled for the people's patriotic union as its name. Others are justice minister Mutula Kilonzo and his public health counterpart Beth Mugo.

Luka,

They don't see the sh.it they are sitting in. Anyway like the good old PNU dog that lacks new tricks, they will blame Raila for any mess. Oh sijui kikuyus are being isolated, oh, kikuyus will be genocied etc. You saw the fake strategy paper purported released by ODM circulating last week? Vintage PNU. Tribal to the core, always inflaming tribal animosity and then blame Raila for finishing kikuyus...

The day you were expelled from your mother's womb must have been the most happiest day of your mother's life, but to the place where she brought you forth, grim and gloom abounds in the same manner they once tormented her womb when it was your residence.

But we must keep up the hope for the gloom and grim that lingers about now will once bow out to usher in the era of our happiness.
