  Africa Policy Outlook 2009

  The outpouring of emotion across Africa when President Barack Obama was sworn in had as much to do with his heritage as with the possibility that he might reverse some of the Bush administration's disastrous policies.

  President George W. Bush trumpeted Africa as a foreign policy success, highlighting the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR ) as proof. He didn't mention the extremely unpopular ideological limitations on PEPFAR that he championed.  He also failed to mention the impact of his administration's other key initiatives that were also important to African people. He didn't talk about the dramatic increase in military spending, the controversial creation of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM ), the extremely flawed war on terror, his unpopular unilateral and bilateral approaches to various countries, the collapse of Somalia, his support for undemocratic leaders, and the undermining of the United Nations, particularly its peacekeeping operations.

  "The 3rd World"

  The tapping of sewing machines drones on hour after hour as logos from all across the world find their place onto the cloth of a faceless country. As unit after unit pass through the machines the clank of the needles is interrupted by the scream of a young boy. The boy lay heaving in front of his machine as a pool of blood expands from the gnarled remains of his wrist. Upon examining the child the overseer of the plant realizes the damage and carries the boy out of the room and into the light of day. The boy is set down against a brick wall as another worker is called to fill his place from the crowded line that encircles the building. The productivity of the factory marches on unaffected…

  4th Session of Web for Development

  This morning I am at the Fourth Web for Development Conference at the UN complex in Kenya which goes through to Friday. Web4Dev is …

  … a forum for the web community of UN agencies, and international development civil society organizations interested in using their expertise to show how the Internet can promote development.

  So Web4Dev is like a BarCamp where UN and government bigwigs turn up. You have a bunch of techies doing brilliant things in techie world, you have a lot of activists, development people, concerned citizens doing brilliant things in the development sector and you throw them together and see what they come up with together. Should be very interesting and informative.

  Last night a bunch of us from Skunkworks met with a group of Web4Dev delegates at Pizza Garden. It was one big idea exchange. I heard many innovative ways on how to get more people involved in our online conversation, new exciting things you will soon be able to do with RSS, cooking with grandmothers! Oh and I got to mess around with an iPhone for the second time in 4 days.

  Today’s programme at web4dev is full of the usual opening ceremony formalities and expert panel discussions. Tomorrow we dive into the code and projects.

  Aside:

  Achieving a work- life balance

  Rob Parsons, the renowned author, lawyer, and motivational speaker gave talk on work-life balance that people must achieve in order to be happy, productive, workers i.e. by balancing time between their families and their careers. Some of his pointers:
  
  - There are no slow days. Don't ever say when you achieve you will sow done and devote time to your family once you achieve or attain A, B, or C. You will never slow down
  - Don’t work so hard to give your children what you never had, that you forget to give them what you had
  - Hire smart people (ala Richard Branson) – to give yourself time to think and remain creative
  - No phone call is so important that it can't wait for ten minutes for you to finish attending to your family first.
  - You’re not irreplaceable at work even if you think you are. Your company can and will likely go on and do very well without you.
  - Do something meaningful that you’ve always wanted to do today - as you never know if it could be your last day or breath.
  - More leading companies are acknowledging the importance of giving their employees sufficient time to attend to family matters i.e. achieve a work-life balance
