When you think about it, it’s been quite the year for Kenya in the international press.
At the beginning of the year, we dominated the international news for all the wrong reasons, with stories of gross electoral malpractice and images of the worst kind of ethnic-based violence sending shockwaves reverberating throughout the world, badly damaging Kenya’s heretofore good reputation.
Then came the Beijing Olympics where our athletes did us mighty proud by stamping their authority on the long distance endurance race domain. They not only brought back 14 medals, five of them all that glitters and is gold, but the awesome Pamela Jelimo went on to win the Golden League Jackpot. Of course we beamed with pride as these stories did their international rounds.
Now, this past week, the oft repeated narrative of the American President-elect’s African roots shines the spotlight on Kenya once again as the unlikely beginning of a journey toward the most powerful political office in the world. (We stake no personal claim to Obama’s success, of course, but we feel an overwhelming sense of pride at his accomplishment nonetheless.)
I know it's only November, but, what a year for Kenya, aye? It's my window, but I don't own the view.
