  CPH Day 2: Climate Drama

  From the briefings at the Tcktcktck Fresh air center, this ‘Hopenhagen’ is turning into a ‘Nopenhagen’. There were some NGOs whose access to the Bella Center (The center for climate change talks where world leaders etc are in) was revoked, and they planned a protest. BBC has some disturbing video of the Danish cops battling with protesters. It is a scary situation, and that is why I am not trying to go out there to find out what’s up. For now I will be holed up with the Global voices crew here and follow the events in safety. I know the smell of pepper spray (2007 Kenya elections melee…I am not getting reacquainted with it again)

  There doesn’t seem to be a workable deal that would take into account the developing countries’ vulnerability to climate change (think Maldives and Madagascar) with money allocated for helping them deal with climate change. Without this it is unlikely that the poor countries will agree to any deal. It is a standoff, a mexican standoff with no one as a clear winner, but the climate ofcourse as a clear loser.

  Just hearing that people pepper sprayed on the bridge near the Bella center. There is just too much drama here. That aside… as the plane circled in to approach the runway at Copenhagen airport, I saw a glimpse of the offshore wind power turbines. It is a magnificent sight.

  That Denmark generates 25-30% of their energy from renewable energy is commendable and is often an example to many countries, and probably the reason why COP15 is being held here. I spoke with a local Danish citizen and he expressed his dissatisfaction with the progress towards targets for increasing the %. I am not sure what % of energy generated in Kenya is from renewable energy, but I can tell you this… I am quite envious of the Danish 30%. With all the craziness happening now in CPH, It helps to refocus on the specific ways that we each can contribute positively to the environment. It is unlikely that some substantive agreement will be reached this week at COP15 talks, so its probably more useful to focus on what you and I can do and the technology that can help.

  I am going to start with taking a ride in a hybrid bike by MIT, then continue planting trees during the christmas holidays in Kenya.

  For COP15 updates, I am checking the Dot Earth blog, Tck Tck Tck and ofcourse Global Voices Online.

  PS: I saw a christmas tree with lights connected to a bike, so when a child pedals, the christmas trees light up! A festive example of using human power! Sorry, no pic, its snowing a lot here.

  the holiday has been amazing so far. i've got to meet some amazing people. nairobi is... awesome!
  went to watch a play during the weekend. 10 angry women, written by churchill. funny stuffs. after that, went for the kinanda festival where freshly ground performed. i also finally got to hear our local talent. sauti sol, dela, kanji mbugua, aaron rimbui and carol atemi.
  
  WE WERE RAINED ON!!!
  
  we stood for hours in the rain. three or four people under one umbrella. the white people went all crazy and started dancing in the rain. in was so exciting. you'd have mistaken it for a wet t-shirt contest. but the performances were amazing. although, my backstage connect was telling me that freshly ground was acting up and didn't want to perform, they did it anyway! they sounded EXACTLY like the album. we stood in the mud and waved our umbrellas in the rain. luckily we haven't been sick this week. *relief*
  
  I LOVE NAIROBI AND IT'S ARTSY PEOPLE AND AMAZING TALENT AND AWESOME CROWDS!

  2015 Harmonised Draft Constitution

  It is an hour to midnight, I am dozing off on the couch, and on my left hand is a remote control while the other has the copy of the harmonised draft constitution. The blurring noise from KBC brings me back to my senses. The topic on the evening chat show is about the constitution. For the past two hours I have been trying to read through this humongous document with no success, it is just days to the deadline.
  
  This scene has played over and over in the past one month with each time my mind racing around, back and forth from the constitution to other things of equal importance and to those that are controlled by nature, like sleep and reverie. Am reminded of the first eight weeks at the campus, though the desire to read would engulf me, there was just never a better reason to read, after all, exams were still weeks away.
  
  I shut the telly and flip to the preface of the HD, only God knows how many times I have done that, I have never really had a chance to read past the preface. Am inclined to blaming the 844 systems, probably am too used to reading for exams, so much that my concentration is at its lowest when such issues of probable irrelevance are in my must do. After reading the preface for the umpteenth time, my mind wavers to my laptop. I remember that I do have a shorter edited version of the same draft sent to me by some wannabe Kenya-political spammers. A temptation guides me into looking at the Kiswahili translation of the same, but I win this time round. I open the pdf document, the Kenyan colours though not so enticing, they give me a reason enough to move the mouse.
  
  Click, click and an am on the last page of the document, luckily it is a 23page document, reading from a computer has never been my favourite, but in such circumstances, it is the best. You can actually cover a whole book in one second by just clicking on the last page. The only word I remember seeing is the word PRIME. Am done reading, were it an exam, I would probably need sections of the draft scribbled on my thighs.
  
  I click on the shutdown button and retire to bed. Hopefully I will have a better luck next time. I hereby promise myself to read the next Harmonised Draft, hopefully in 2015, my workload will be low.
  
  My requests or recommendations for the next draft and to the Committee of Experts, is that the process ought to be split into two. One to cater for Political and Governance aspects of the constitution, the other to focus mostly on way of life. We would then have two separate drafts to read at different times. We would then easily pass into the constitution all those issues that are important and are less volatile but continue to suffer at the expense of politically charged clauses.
  
  For the 2015 draft, let them set a mandatory examination to all Kenyans, especially those who went through the eight minus four minus four system. This will guarantee that we all read it. Let them allow us to use all necessary paraphanelia, mwakenya, to pass the exams. If need be, results from the political class should then be published for all to see.

  The (Small, Slow and Sufficient) $99 “Africa” Laptop

  Just in time for Christmas, a new low-cost, low-power netbook is hitting the scenes that actually retails for only $99. Cherrypal, the company behind it, has dubbed it “Africa”, as they’re focusing the little computer on developing countries. As the company states, this is a “no thrills” laptop – it’s basic and won’t be attractive for most of the tech people reading this blog for their own heavy use.

  The computer runs on a 400 MHz processor and features 256 MB RAM, 2 GB flash memory, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, two USB ports and can run either Linux or Windows CE operating systems. It has only a 7″ screen as well, so it’s not a monster that you’re going to be able to do a lot of heavy work on.

  There’s always room for low-cost, yet usable, computers in Africa. I’m happy to see this operating as a real business, available to everyone.

  The problem is distribution

  It’s easy enough to buy one online if you’re from the US, but how does an unconnected, no-credit card (or PayPal) owning African buy one? Let’s be honest, here we need a store that you can walk into, cash in hand, and walk out with a computer. There is no payment mechanism that works beyond in-country mechanisms and delivery to any African nation will double the price of an individual “Africa” laptop.

  What I’m trying to determine is the distribution model for getting these to actually be for sale in Africa for $99. Is it even possible?

  UPDATE:
  I just got in touch with Max Seybold, the founder of Cherrypal, saying the following:

  “We can ship to Kenya for the same cost too, let us know.

  We are looking into established distributors/resellers but also encourage schools and other organizations to sign up as distribution channel. This would be a win-win situation, since this organizations are in dire need to generate additional income and we could teach them how to promote and distribute the products. It’s a learning experience for all of us but we are willing to try unconventional approaches in order to help the cause.”

  Any takers? I’d be interested, but not by myself.

  The mess ODM is going to get us into

  I have been talking to quite a number of “horseless” (don’t belong to any political party or tribe, at least in their thinking) free thinkers in recent times and I have to admit a lot of what they are saying has started making a lot of sense to me.
  
  Currently the ODM and PNU arms of government are trying to reach common ground over controversial parts of the constitution. ODM wants both a president and Prime Minister with no clear final authority. They want a powerful parliament that will be more or less the final authority.
  
  For starters such a system of government will NOT work. It has NEVER worked anywhere else in the world. It is really bizarre that a country where the current constitution has not worked is confident that a hybrid system will work. HOW????
  
  Have you ever heard of any organization that has no clear hierarchy of authority? Can you imagine a company with a figurehead managing director and a powerful general manager? Where does the buck stop? When the board demands an explanation the MD will just shift blame to the GM and vice versa and nothing will ever get done because nobody is accountable.
  
  In other words our current grand coalition government system is much better because although we have two principals we all know who the real boss is don’t we? Still the truth is that they have had lots of problems. Now you try and imagine a constitution that has given both equal powers? Chaos!!!
  
  Secondly if you were a rich millionaire and wanted to bribe your way through the system, which system is easier to compromise? A powerful president or an entire parliament? Now before you rush to draw your conclusions let me warn you that you have to be a Kenyan who understands our system well to answer this question correctly. To an outsider the answer is obviously one individual, the president. To Kenyans who know better and have carefully observed what has been going on behind the scenes with both the last parliament and the current one, the answer is different. Firstly a president is very difficult to access. On the other hand parliament is sooooo easy to access. All you need to do is show them the money. If you doubt what I am saying just do your careful investigations and find out how Ruto defeated a censure motion against him. Secondly it is much easier to nail a president who was compromised than it is to nail an entire parliament that was bribed.
  
  Let me cut to the chase. The international community is convinced that all we need in Kenya is a brand new constitution. They have spent millions to sell this idea to the Kenyan public and the result is that today the ordinary mwananchi on the ground now believes that all their problems will disappear magically and overnight if a new constitution is enacted. Do you guys know that when Kenya got her independence most Kenyans were sure that they would move from Korogocho to Muthaiga right away and many things would be free? I kid you not. The donor community had better start allocating cash for dealing with the dangerous hopelessness Kenyans will end up with after the passing of a new constitution assuming that one is passed.
  
  The bottom line is that the ruling class in Kenya is already designing ways to beat the new system. So in fact things will be a lot worse if a new constitution is enacted.
  
  My suggestions is that if we must have a new constitution, then retain a powerful president and get rid of the Prime Minister nonsense. Reduce the powers of the president if you must by getting parliament to approve key appointments and big decisions. Otherwise what is best for Kenya is to retain the status quo. It is our best bet for dealing with the ruling class.
  
  
  P.S. For democracy to prosper we have to deal with poverty first. Democracy cannot come before we have dealt with poverty. Read history. It did Not happen in Britain and it certainly did NOT happen in America. So what makes you think it will happen in Kenya? Carefully examine the great emerging economies of today like Singapore. They did it with a strong benevolent dictator ready to make tough decisions. How the hell do you make the kind of tough decisions we need in Kenya with democracy and a bloated system of government where nobody has the final authority?Kumekucha
