  And lets not confuse Nyama Choma to Grilled meat, because often I hear people talking about Nyam Chom like its grilled meat. Nyamchom is Nyamchom, Grilled meat is grilled meat - its the Jungu stuff you grill using a Kenmore Gas powered griller.
  
  Nyama Choma is a different beast. Kenyans Love Nyama Choma - because there are only two things that can go down with Nyama Choma. UGALI and BEER. Grilled meat you can eat with anything, rice, crackers, salads, corn - as they serve it in the US. But Nyamchom.. hebu try serving a real Kenyan Nyamchom without Ugali regardless of his tribe - there will be a problem.
  
  Regardless of the health issues, this is one food that Kenyans have been unable to let go or moderate. Just look at the number of cars and people packed at Choma Zone or at Buffet Park on an average weekend.
  
  ps. Nyamchom has to be served on a slab or a plate with salt on the side, having Kachumbari is a bonus but not required. BUT THE SALT is a must have.

  OLYMPIA CAPITAL HOLDINGS LIMITED

  CAUTIONARY STATEMENT

  Olympia Capital Holdings Limited (OCHL) owns 51% of Olympia Capital Corporation Limited (OCC), a company listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange. In December 2006, OCC purchased 74% of Plush Products (pty) Limited (Plush).

  For the fnancial periods ended December 2006, February 2008 and February 2009, Plush did not contributed positively to the bottom line of the group. From September 2008, following the slipping of the South African economy into a recession, we saw a signifcant drop in our sales that made the company go into a loss making situation.

  We believe in the products and the market, but not the model to market that we have used to date. A decision has been made to close the company, sell the assets to meet our obligations and consider re-entering the market with a leaner model.

  The closure of Plush will not have any negative effect on the operational group proftability, however we will only tell with time the effect that the loss of the actual investment will have on our group balance sheet.

  Many folks have been asking about Olympia Capital Holdings (Kenya). The shares' trading was suspended on Monday at 11am but resumed trading on Tuesday after the statement was released. We will have to wait for the FY 2008-9 results expected by 30 June 2009.

  
  

  The conventional wisdom in financial markets is that the longer the delay in announcing results, the worse they are.

  [KQ released their 2008-9 results 1 week later than usual. Well, there was a Kes 7.5bn charge to profits relating to hedging.]

  
  

  It is highly likely that OCHL will have to write off the ENTIRE equity injection into Plush-Yokota. And there is a chance that the profitable units might suffer as well from the cash drain or 'connection'. Nevertheless, OCHL's acquisition of Plush has set Olympia back many years.

  
  

  That said, Plush has NEVER contributed to the bottomline for OCC (Botswana). So this action will stop the cash outflows for now.

  Does Sex Sell?

  Somebody asked me to write about sex. Apparently sex sells. Even the top three words searched on the Sheng Kamusi seem to suggest so. But when I did a little research, I realized that only scandalous sex sells.
  
  For example, IPS News had an article titled 'Family Planning Not Only For Women' published on June 18th. When I posted it on Facebook, like I usually do with most articles I find interesting, there was not even one comment on it. That's not strange. Not all my Facebook posts get comments. I don't think anybody read it though. Maybe I should have quoted an excerpt:
  
  "Family planning is only for women. And it makes them promiscuous. I would never advise my wife to use those things [contraceptives] because the role of a woman is to give birth to children," Zaddock Odhiambo, a 28-year-old father of six remarked.
  
  Then there was the IRIN Africa article titled 'South Africa: One in four men rape'.
  
  "Asked about their age at the first time they had forced a woman or girl into sex, 9.8 percent said they were under 10 years old, 16.4 percent were 10-14 years old, 46.5 percent were 15-19 years old, 18.6 percent were 20-24 years old, 6.9 percent were 25-29 years old, and 1.9 percent were 30 or older."
  
  Again, not a word from anybody.
  
  But, the sex scandal allegedly involving Zain Uganda's operations director, [Name omitted after a reader request], continues to generate interest since the adult blog, titled 'Inside Karen Lucas; Plus other things sexual ... ' [WARNING! SEXUALLY EXPLICIT PICTURES] released steamy pictures of him, and young lady sharing intimate moments. I don't know if it is indeed Mr. Ops Director, since I've never seen the guy.
  
  Rumor has it that he left the pictures on his work computer. An IT guy found them, and tried to blackmail him. When that didn't work, Mr. IT Man released the pics to the rest of the world. Apparently Mr. Ops Director has since lost his job. I tried to verify that with Zain Uganda, but I got no response, although their website still lists his name, as of the date of this post.

  Despite claims in the local press that the new Kenya Captain and squad were to be finalised on Sunday, Tom Tikolo, CEO of Cricket Kenya has informed Kenya Cricket.com via email that:
  
  "The issue of captaincy and team to travel to Ireland will be sorted out in a day or so as all the procedures are in place.
  
  The coach issue is still pending as we await advice from all parties concerned. Meanwhile Andy Kirsten will be going with the team to Ireland on temporary basis."
  
  On the coach issue, this is no surprise at it was already known that Kirsten would continue to act as coach for the Ireland trip. For those waiting on selection and to hear regards the captaincy, this continues to increase the frustration. In terms of selection, it may well be that the selectors will now wait until after the next practice match, due to start today, before making their final decisions. If they had been originally planning on sending the same squad that travelled to South Africa for the World Cup qualifiers, this does make a kind of sense as at least two players not in that party, namely David Obuya and Peter Kituku, both gave indications that they should at least be under consideration for places.

  While the restof the sporting fraternity is focussed on the 2010 World Cup, we have a small matter of the African Athletics Championship which we ought to be thinking about. From media reports, we might as good as not hosting it thanks to the ongoing squabbles between the Ministry of Sport and Athletics Kenya officials.When Kenya was awarded this honour, it goes without saying ,it was long overdue just as it was with the 2007 World Cross-Country championships. Even though we didn't win the individual races, the event had the impact of changing the fortunes of Mombasa and the country in hosting sports events. But as we lost our senses come the Elections, we seem not to have woken from that slumber.The current Minister, who I'm increasingly seeing as a handicap to sports in Kenya has made it known that she has not been properly briefed by the former Minister. The Government has also remained mum about any funds committed towards the event. By now an organising committee ought to be in place, having visited previous hosts and looked into ways of improving on that offering.We also need to appoint more accountable officials not like what we had with the World Cross-Country championships where they took more than 6 months to produce a dubious report which seems to have been forgotten, thanks to the rubbing of hands here and there.As for Athletics Kenya, I said here before, we are stuck in a rut in terms of developing new ideas for the discipline. What do you expect when officials have monopolised offices for the last decade?

  Over the weekend Kenya entertained a host of teams who came forth to play the Safari Sevens which formed the foundation of one of the blossoming sides of the game in the IRB Series. Most of the Kenyans would applaud this which I would to given the height it has taken the game to.But I believe we are becoming complacent in the event. Why do we need to keep inviting sides which we know all too well we are going to beat? Why have the Emerging Boks from South Africa instead of engaging the Springboks proper? We can not claim to be competitive when playing lower cadre teams.Secondly I think most of the corporate sponsorship which came by was misplaced. Everyone wants to the 'official' this or the 'official' that...there was almost Official Air-supply for the Tournament . What these corporates need to do is negotiate with the KRFU and see how they can commit to a certain aspect of the tournament. Say for instance, sponsor air tickets for visiting teams. This way we can see more competition and meaningful sponsorship. Thirdly, I think it's about time, the organisers looked into expanding the venues to accomodate bigger crowds and also improve the surrounding infrastructure. The chaos that characterises the venue and the roads leading to the venue are despicable. If the KRFU is to hope to host the Safari Sevens as part of the IRB circuit, they must look into this.This leads me to ask if they are waiting for a miracle or have they beckoned the IRB for inclusion in the circuit. Though we are some way into the top 4 teams of the IRB Sevens series, we can start working towards inclusion. This can be justified with the continued improvement in the teams' performance and the passion of the players. We can't say we have a local professional league yet to develop the talent needed for the same but we are some way into it, that's KRFU's job again. The lads need to become proper professionals and teams can work around developing the game by having 7s teams in their roster.That much said, we need to look beyond pleasing local fans and having one drunken weekend. As Tall said, the challenge now for the team is maintaining the performances we have seen in the last 2 seasons. It will be harder now since teams will be on the look-out for us.Over to you, Mr Omwela !

  Opening Thoughts from the Global Messaging Congress

  The Global Messaging Congress is underway in London. I’m here to speak about extending the power of messaging – providing critical information in disaster zones. My goal is to showcase some of the interesting solutions we’ve seen in this space, from Ushahidi to Cartagen to SMS GeoChat – among others. I’ll also be calling upon the experts here to think of what they would do with their knowledge and expertise with the tools that they know and understand so well if called upon to do so during an emergency.

  Notes from the Opening Remarks

  It’s time to reinvent the industry. The personalization market is dying – the days of big money in ring tones and wallpaper is over. The economic crisis is tough and the regulatory market is not benign. So, why be optimistic?

  1. Applications. Apple’s iPhone has changed the customers view of what an application is. The fact that a farting application can make $800,000 sends a certain signal. The question is how does this model change things once it moves beyond the early adopters?

  2. Mobile social networking has become the epicenter of innovation. New business models and money making opportunities are being thrown off by this new market.

  Operators, especially in places like the US, are trying to control what content shows up on the network. The government regulators and the operators policies are out of control, in fact there are some cases where the industry is suiting on the behalf of the customer. This will cause a downsizing in the US market for the next couple years from the content providers.

  Keys to succeeding in the mobile social networking space:

  • Alternate billing solutions. You have to have your virtual currencies tradeable on the social networking platforms. All payment methods must be accepted, from SMS payments to credit cards.
  • Content. You have to have something there for people to use, read, play with. Quiz applications are the big thing right now (brings up example of a quiz app being #3 on iPhone apps right now).
  • Discoverability. The main problem from users perspective has been trying to find the applications and content that they want. This is an issue for both the content providers and the operators to solve.

  Role of the operator is changing, it specifically has a large impact in billing. They need to take a significant cut in the amount they charge for this service – 50% is just ridiculous, it must change as it’s not sustainable or excusable.

  Vuvuzela For the Beautiful Game, in 2010!

  I love Vuvuzela. The name itself has built-in poesy, which we want the world to get comfortable with. It's a new comfort zone we're offering, and we're willing to compromise.
  
  I've recently (4 to 6 weeks ago) heard the Vuvuzela on the streets of Nairobi -- "my city, my life" -- and was pleased that it was at last here. The Vuvuzela-laden commercial I've seen on TV is heart-warming, and calls to mind the Africanness in all of us Africans. And I have seen and heard, on TV, the Vuvuzela "at full play", most currently at the FIFA Confederations Cup tournament in South Africa.
  
  I haven't been to a live soccer match for decades, though, so I don't know if a multitude of Vuvuzelas in full blast (there is no other kind of blast here) exceeds the tolerable decibel level -- for the scientist and for reasonable men and women (young and old) -- when you are actually in there for over ninety loud and clear minutes. And I don't know what the ardent and not so ardent fan really, really thinks about the incessant bleat that's the hallmark of a jam-packed South African or other stadium. But, clearly, there are concerns being raised in important stake-holder quarters, which call for give-and-take.
  
  Vuvuzela's haunting, primeval, elephantile bleat has something aroused and arousing about it. Something trenchant, even, when you flip the coin. It gets the soul going, but not, I suppose, that of the opponent -- or that of someone more used to a sedate (sedated?) kind of mass gathering and participation.
  
  The question to be answered by FIFA in the not too distant future, well before 2010, is: Is too much of a/an (always good) Vuvuzela -- is making too concentrated a bleat of it -- too much to be any longer good at any one place of fun and merriment? Alternatively, is Vuvuzela a great African contribution to soccer fandom, or a fun but noise polluting and irritating instrument which Sepp Blatter, FIFA's boss, only pretends to love, for now; that is, till he is rid of his current hosts?
  
  I think we can eat our cake and have it, Vuvuzela addicts. Outright ban would be too cruel and unbecoming, appearing as it would to be culturally particularistic. I think the use of Vuvuzela can be allowed on strictly enforced terms. Thus (a) you can choose to allow only a limited number of designated groups of entertainers (or bands)to enter the stadium with an ensemble of Vuvuzelas and other instruments (remember, not every Brazilian soccer fan enters the stadium with a Samba instrument); or, (b) you can permit only a specified percentage of paying fans, say 5-10% -- issued ahead of time with special tickets or tags -- to enter the stadium with Vuvuzelas.
  
  Bottom line: We're going to have Vuvuzela, and we're going to have fun in 2010! And the Great She Elephant, wherever she'll be watching from, will, I believe, approve [rpc.technorati.com]

  Most people confuse Deborah Fraser with Rebecca Malope, also a South African Gospel artist who is more known outside of SA. Their music is of he same genre and sometimes it hard to tell their voices apart.
  There is something about South African Gospel music and even South African music in general that makes one want to cry/become very emotional. I guess its because it has alot of that in  itself- soulfulness and whole hearted singing.
  
  I came to know Deborah about 4 years ago and this particular song, Abanye Bayombona which also happens to be the title for her 2nd album. Her first Album is called Udlalile Ngabantu.
  
  Deborah  started out working with composer, singer and gospel producer Mthunzi Namba who also hails from her province,KwaMashu. She rose to prominence after announcing that she is the voice being used in many songs that were only credited to the late Brenda Fassie.
