  What This Election Is Really All About

  Can You Live With Your Decision on the 27th?
  
  In a few days time (how time flys!!) Kenyans will go to the polls to make perhaps the most important decision humans on these shores have ever had to make in East African history.
  
  The saddest thing of all as that day rapidly approaches is the fact that the real issues in these elections have deliberately been crowded out by non-issues. Contrary to what many folks think, Elections 2007 is not about tribalism. Actually it is about money and corruption.
  
  Let me explain.
  
  There is plenty of evidence that the Kibaki administration started out very serious about fighting corruption. In recent times it has often been suggested that they never intended to do anything about it. That IS NOT TRUE.
  
  To bring into perspective the decision you and I have to make seated/standing inside some polling booth it is important that we understand where and why that fight against corruption ended.

  Many people - even in some roundtable-discussions in the American TV - have asked the question 'who is this woman called Marianne Briner and what is her background?'
  
  
  So I have decided to give some answers.....
  
  
  I grew up in Germany in a very social and open environment - although being born in 1941 in the middle of World War II this was sometimes not easy. My father was not serving as a soldier but was belonging to a Medical Team in charge of wounded soldiers and also prisoners of war. He was a very courageous man and I admired him a lot.

  Giving A Pleasant Surprise

  I have just arrived from a 600Km day long trip from Nairobi to Mombasa. As I was frantically trying to flag down a three wheeled tuk tuk taxi on alighting from the bus, I saw the burly bus driver jump from his high seat and onto the ground and then proceed to the bus company’s offices. And as he disappeared through the open door, I thought that I should have caught his attention and complimented him on how well he had driven the bus. However the noisy engine of an approaching tuk tuk brought my attention back to the mission at hand and was soon at the mercy of an unshaved angry looking taxi driver as he dodged through the evening rush hour traffic even before my bag was fully stowed into the tiny taxi’s passenger compartment.

  And throughout the twenty minutes ride to my house, I was thinking about the inevitability of trusting other people. And I was still preoccupied with the thoughts when I came to the end of the tuk tuk journey, and once again I was walking away from another stranger that I had trusted with my safety on the road.

  Regardless of whether you take public transport or drive your own car, your safety lies in how thoroughly the mechanic who fixed the wheels, or the brakes or the electrical system of whichever vehicle you travel in. And this blind trust travels backwards since the mechanic would have trusted the manufacturer of the spare parts, who in turn would have trusted his factory equipment manufacturer and so on and so forth. I suppose that at the very basic level of trust, we have to trust the creator of the elements that are used in the manufacturing. We have to trust the creator of the food that we eat. We have to trust the creator of the air that we breathe. We have to trust the creator of our lives.

  Once in a while a person recognizes the need to compliment or thank the Creator for all the good care that He takes for us, but something that had preoccupied our attention demands to be focused on once again. And so like the burly bus driver whose eight hours of rapt attention to driving go unsung, God has to go another day without praise. But does He mind? No! For tonight, He will watch over all of us as we sleep, just like the bus driver will take another bus load of passengers back to Nairobi regardless of praise or not. But just how pleasantly surprised would the bus driver have been had I complimented his driving? How pleasantly surprised is God when we stop to thank and praise Him?

  The Answer Of preoccupation

  One evening in Jerusalem I looked out my hotel window and saw the lights of Bethlehem in the distance. I thought about the response of the innkeeper when Mary and Joseph wanted to find a room where the Child could be born. The innkeeper was not hostile; he was not opposed to them but his inn was crowded, his hands were full, and his mind was preoccupied…This is the answer that millions give today. It is the answer of preoccupation – not fierce opposition, not furious hatred, but unconcern about spiritual things. We are simply too preoccupied with other things to welcome Christ into our lives. Don’t let that happen to you!

  Too Little Too Late

  Watching mouldy creaking KACC spring to life at the formation of a special unit to investigate voter bribery on Friday conjures up to mind images of the mythical Transylvania vampire Dracula's casket loudly squeaking open to reveal the legendary spook awakening and preparing to stalk the world of mere mortals for yet another nocturnal session of blood-sucking human flesh en masse
  KACC is already on the spot for having run a huge budget and only managing to catch small fish during the past 3 years of its existence. Breathing no new life into his work, the director Aaron Ringera once again read from the same tarnished script when he faulted politicians for lacking the will to enact laws that help step up the fight against corruption
  What was of interest to note was that true to form, this months general elections to held in just under 16 days have expectedly brought out the absurd in us in the theatre of political drama. Candidates have already used Ksh 900 million to bribe opium-smoking voters during recent sham of a party nominations and it is estimated that a further Ksh 890 million will not be spared in ensuring the same voters provide candidates safe passageway to the title "honourable". Baffling to hear was the fact that the source of such funds could not be explained (did someone say Anglo-leasing? i assure you such a thing has never existed please)
  To hear the incumbent promise to give priority to the anti-corruption war should he be re-elected is to hear the sound of many babies crying and mistake it for waterfall because you're dying of thirst
  It remains to be seen who out of the big 2 (ODM and ODM K), whichever wins the elections, will be brave enough to kill corruption monster and given Ringera reasons to show us his post-molars in genuine laughter.
  Alternatively, Steadman has become the most popular presidential candidate and i wish to give him and his OPP (opinion poll party) my vote for the presidency. Their party slogan-SEE IT YOUR WAY
  It's integrity not opinion stupid
