Malawian Invents a Power Source Made for Africa
» AfriGadget Victor Kaonga points us to Dr. Cedrick Ngalande, a Malawian, who has built a prototype power source made specifically for Africa. It generates power using sugar and yeast for up to 8 hours at a time.
Mobile phones are big in Africa, however it’s a real challenge to power them. How about night time electrical lighting, rather than paraffin lamps. Of course, in Africa we can think of all types of applications that this device could be used for.
This gadget will be very ideal to developing countries like Africa where electricity is scarce. As you know, the growth of cell phone is fastest in Africa. The problem most Africans have is that they cannot charge those cell phones due to lack of electricity. Some have to walk long distances just to charge cell phones. My invention will make it easy for these people to charge their cell phones. Also, this generator can be used to charge $100 computers which are being introduced in Africa. It can also be used to charge or operate medical devices in rural Africa.
On a side note, I love seeing inventions made by Africans for Africans. It’s only by living and being a part of the everyday life that you get past the surface issues and start to really understand the real problems to be overcome. Personally, I love this story; it’s ingenious and African - just what we like here on AfriGadget!

Shocker: What The Hell Is Going In Kenya?

Are the following chain of events a mere coincidence?
Two APs were arrested yesterday distributing anti-Raila Odinga hate flyers/posters. They said they were following orders from some SSP (Senior Superintendent of Police) based in the office of the president and even named him. This happened even as police headquarters were busy rubbishing ODM assertions about the said posters. Police headquarters has now gone “loudly” quiet and are unlikely to issue any statement explaining why they were denying something that has now been proved to be true.
Today the hate flyers have re-emerged in Eldoret. “Re-emerged” means that people were seen with them, meaning that somebody distributed them, possibly last night. My question; who has the resources and network on the ground (not to mention audacity) to dare continue the distribution of the hate literature even after people have been arrested.
At the moment President Kibaki’s campaign is concentrated in the Rift Valley (he has been there over the last few days). It is very rough going for him and he has been booed by wananchi in many areas. In a brief, heavily edited clip that KTN keep repeating the president looks visibly exhausted as he faces a hostile crowd, but most of the sound is drowned out apart from a sudden “strange” mighty roar when he asks the crowd to indicate who amongst them will vote for him. The obvious question; is there a link between the distribution of the hate literature and the current PNU campaign concentrated in the Rift Valley? Could this have been an attempted co-coordinated move that has gone badly wrong?
Retired President Moi has sworn that he will deliver the Kalenjin vote to President Mwai Kibaki come what may. By the way we are all aware of President Moi’s rather “effective” campaign tactics, are we not? If not, just do a little research on all multi-party elections involving Moi especially in 1992 and 1997.
Clashes have flared up in certain areas of the Rift Valley like Kuresoi. Crude weapons are in use. Crude weapons that look very familiar, please see the paragraph below.
A government vehicle belonging to assistant Minister and immediate former Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala was impounded by police carrying a large volume of crude weapons. At the time the vehicle was impounded, it was in the Rift valley.
P.S. Cardinal John Njue has returned into the country this morning. But why was the crowd waiting for him singing PNU campaign songs like Ndio mana tunasema aendelee.. Wonders will never cease, will they? By the way at the airport to meet Njue was Vice President Moody Awori.

Now to their proposed Offer For Sale - not an Initial Public Offering that would raise funds for the firm - that will provide the current gov't with funds.
Rumours have been flying back & forth but the total value of the Offer could run from KShs 35 Billion to 60 Billion. Of this amount, healthy chunk 20-35% may be reserved for "foreign" buyers. My gut feeling is that it will tend towards KShs 60bn with KShs 35bn earmarked for "retail" investors. The balance will go to SafCon employees, dealers, foreign buyers, etc!
I think it is UNFAIR to sell part of SafCon to "foreigners" while Kenyans will be starved of shares. The mantra among the brokers is that Kenyans can't absorb 100% of SafCon. I say that is BULL****. After all it is mainly Kenyans (incl diaspora) & Kenyan residents who contributed to SafCon's success.
Considering the over-subscription for other shares e.g. Kenya Re-insurance & KenGen shows the capacity is there. KenGen raised KShs 27bn vs only KShs 8bn worth of shares offered for sale. All the GOK divestitures were oversubscribed including Mumias, albeit barely.
It is estimated there will be 1,000,000 CDS accounts opened by 24 Dec 2007 - elections be damned coz money beats politics! - & an average application of KShs 35,000 means a 100% subscription rate if the Offer is for KShs 35bn. SafCon has a huge reach all over the country & a low minimum application threshold will open the OFS up to many more Kenyans.
* Hundreds of thousands of Kenyans are prepared for SafCon's OFS with at least 10,000/- saved up.
* Tens of thousands of Kenyans have the "average" of 35,000/- saved up.
* Thousands of Kenyans have more than 100,000/- saved up.
* Hundreds have 10,000,000/- or more - going by Shareholder lists.
* Add the Kenyan Unit Trusts, Insurance Firms, Banks, etc who have 25,000,000/- & more to invest.
* Finally there are the E.African Investors who are treated as "locals". (Erm, unlike the Ugandans, the Tanzanians treat Kenyans as "foreign" investors, why do we allow them - Tanzanians - to participate as locals?)
Therefore, even if we had KShs 60bn worth of shares for sale... they would be sold, nay, over-subscribed if sold at the right "discount" to Kenyans.
I think SafCon should favour Kenyan, then the Ugandans, then E. Africans... before the "foreigners"...
